The FlyRight Handbook
CHAPTER 3. Inflight Checks
1. Maintain Visual Line of Sight
Maintain Visual Line of Sight (VLOS) During flight:
- Keep the drone within your direct line of sight at all times
- Avoid relying solely on the camera feed
- Continuously scan the surrounding airspace
- Be aware of other aircraft or hazards
2. Monitor Signal & Telemetry
While airborne:
- Keep an eye on signal strength
- Monitor altitude, distance, and speed
- Watch for warning alerts on the controller/app
- Be prepared to respond to signal loss
3. Battery Management
Throughout the flight:
- Continuously monitor battery levels
- Plan to return with sufficient reserve
- Avoid over-discharging the battery
- Initiate return-to-home (RTH) early if needed
4. Environmental Awareness
Stay alert to changing conditions:
- Monitor wind speed and direction
- Watch for moving obstacles (people, vehicles, animals)
- Be cautious near buildings or terrain
- Adjust flight path as conditions change
5. Aircraft Performance Check
Continuous monitoring and evaluation of the aircraft’s systems and operating performance:
- Observe stability and responsiveness
- Watch for unusual vibrations or drift
- Ensure GPS hold and positioning are stable
- Be ready to land immediately if issues arise
Simple Memory Trick Think: “V.S.B.E.P.”
Visual line of sight – Signal monitoring – Battery control – Environmental awareness – Performance check
